"Im Sad About It"---
Lee MosesIt may seem a bit overstated to refer to
Lee Moses as one of my absolute favorite soul vocalists considering that he only released one full-length LP and a handful of singles during his entire career. However,
Time And Place is an album of such magnitude that it offers more exceptional material than most artists could manage to produce in a prolific lifetime of recording.
For many years
, Time And Place (originally released on Maple Records) was such an obscurity that even the most industrious crate diggers had a difficult time securing a copy. Because I felt so strongly that the record should be heard by soul fans worldwide, I've previously shared a couple of my favorite tracks from the LP. Many people wrote to me about how much they enjoyed those songs, and inquired as to how they might go about finding a copy of their own. Well, soul children---your day has finally come. A few months ago, Castle Records in the UK finally re-issued the album and included the material from his elusive 45s as well.
Moses wrote some of his own material, and "Sad About It" is one such example. While his coverage of other artists' material is stellar (see "Hey Joe" and "California Dreaming"), there is something particularly affecting about hearing him wail and moan over tunes that are biographical in nature. His emotional and gut-wrenching vocal delivery has come to epitomize the very sound of Southern soul---at least for myself and
Moses' dedicated cult following. Your initiation begins now...
Dig deeper...To
really persuade you of the necessity of purchasing this LP, watch the record spin on the turntable while you listen to one of
Lee's best tracks---"Bad Girl (Part 1)":

Thanks for blessing us with your music, knowledge and wisdom! Peace!
shamrock---Thanks for the comment--knowing people enjoy the tunes and info makes it all worthwhile.
Apologies to anyone who tried to d/l that Esther Phillips track in the first 30 minutes. It wasn't working well, so I re-upped.
Scholar - I'm speechless. Another phenomenal blessing of the best Soul anyone could have to offer. I just added that new Lee Moses retrospective to my shopping cart.
I'll get at you this week with an email.
No one best fuck wit da Scholar!!
I love that Lee Moses album too- I remember the LP cover, it was crazy intricate and symmetrical and awesome. I like the Sanctuary/ Castle label, they do good stuff.
(i had to delete my first comment b/c i fucked up the links)
yo scholar, i think you misspoke a bit about the Dudley Perkins & Georgia Anne Muldrow album (and the only reason I'm so sure of it is that I reviewed it myself the other day).
Beautiful Mindz, which features the track you posted (I got another one on my post), should actually be considered a 2Tall album (at least I think). It's slated as DJ 2Tall Presents..., and is put out on labels he is affiliated with (not Stones Throw like you wrote). I'm pretty sure Dudley and Georgia are included in the artist title to attract listeners since 2Tall isn't a particularly well known name.
Now according to their myspace page, Georgia and Dudley got another venture dropping in September, but again, not on Stones Throw but Look Records. It is apparently (and wonderfully) called The Message Uni Versa and would most likely be considered their first official release as a tandem.
just thought I'd clarify a bit. hopefully it was all correct.

goddammit! i don't know what bloggers deal is right now, but i had to delete 4 comments before it worked right.. all the links were written correctly, but some worked and some just didn't appear.. sorry to clog up your comment box with deletions.
Flood---Hopefully you'll be back to thank me for the Lee Moses. I can't imagine that it won't bring you incredible heartache and joy at the same time. Thanks for the props...
Lils---I'll be hitting your inbox in a day or two---still contemplating what you asked me the other day. Hope you'll protect me if someone does fucks with me.
Michael---I stand corrected about it being on Stones Throw. I looked back at the reference I used, and indeed---it just repeatedly referred to Dudley and Georgia as ST artists. Apologies for the mix-up, especially because I did quite a bit of research for this post in general.
Oddly, I found that CD Universe claims it's coming out on Electric Breaks---not Eclectic, so I guess I'm not the only one confused.
I changed the label to make it proper, but left the rest of my discussion intact. I didn't say much about 2Tall or Muldrow because my focus in writing was really on Dudley's performance on the record. I knew it was 2Tall's record (thus, his name being first in the artist title attached to the mp3), but I got on a Declaime tangent and kinda didn't do enough to push it as a 2Tall production. Hopefully he won't feel slighted and try to kick my ass!
Thanks for the correction about the label and for sharing some knowledge about the first official Geo/Dud collaboration. I'll look forward to it.
You just get better with time, I've been waiting a while for a decent version Soul Power 74.
Maybe consider throwing up Hijack by Enoch Light Orchestra?
And if you are feeling especially guru-ish, can you find "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" by Dorothy Ashby - used by Kanye on Finding Forever.
Keep the awesomeness coming.
Thanks heaps.
Paul
Scholar - being a Limey I now have that very Lee Moses album. But it's one thing for an album to be available and it's another to ever think to look for such a thing. When an artist is slept on so long, the knowledge gets kind of lost...
So I owe you big time for introducing me to Lee Moses. It is a good thing you do with this blog.
Many thanx
Paul---Gratitude for your readership and I'll keep those requests in mind. Strangely, I already have that Enoch Light joint in the pipes for a future post as well as some Finding Forever samples. Don't think I have that Ashby song in my collection yet, but I'll keep my eye out for you.
red one---I thought about you when I posted the Lee Moses. I figured that you'd gotten the LP, but I always remember how much you liked him when I posted his material before. Hope you're well. Glad you've been dropping by again lately.
discovered Lee Moses after downloading a Stones Throw mix which included his amazing version of Hey Joe. Finally got the album a few months ago and loving it.
Really helpful data, thank you for the post.
