Souled On Samples: You Won't Need No Parachute Cuz I'm Gon' Keep You Fly

Happy belated New Year, soul bambinos...

Kicking things off with a massive Souled On Samples post seemed like the only righteous way to get things crackin' for my peoples in '09. This time around, I mainly featured original songs that were sampled in joints from the past year, but I threw in a little variety for anyone who thinks hip hop overwhelmingly sucked ass in '08 (I'm pretty certain you're out there). I guess you really can't get mad at folks for turnin' a deaf ear on Weezy, Jeezy, Skeezy, Cheezy, et al. Different strokes to rule the world and all that happy shit...and word to the homie Gary Coleman for this insightful bit of wisdom.

HNY Scholar. Seems we both manage to keep on keeping on.

A big thank you for the Debbie Taylor in particular. Wow I have to get this I thought - then I realised I already have it(!) as it's the B side of Never Gonna To Let Him Know, another great track. I couldn't have been in the right frame of mind to enjoy it when I first flipped it. Debbie didn't commit much to vinyl but every one's a gem.

I know I don't need to tell you this, but to all your readers: Never pass on any of her output.

oh btw, that Mr Asimov knows a thing or two.

I have a question and with your knowledge I stand a chance of an answer. I hope you can help. You know the song 'Didn't I' by Darondo? The words sound familiar. Has there been a cover of this. Thanks. Tim, London

it happens occasionally that i nap on suckas, gladys knight is among them - she amazes me and then somehow i forget. love finds its own way is the truth. lamont dozier brings equal hotness, makes a sunny day... sweaty. y'know? good stuff.

josef---No problem. Keep diggin' and thanks for the comment.

darcy---HNY...hope yours is off to a very good start.

DT is one of those phenomenal soul divas that I can't resist. A good friend introduced me to her music a few years ago, and I've been a fan ever since. I haven't come across any of her 45s at the record stores I frequent yet, so I may have to break down and do some online shopping (always less thrilling for me than a fortuitous discovery made while digging through crates). Regardless, it's well worth the effort.

Let's hope we both keep finding good music to help us stay inspired this year. Be well.

Chris,

Binary Star's 2 full-lengths would both make my list of best hip hop albums ever. One Be Lo is pretty dope on his own, but nothing he's done since touches the almighty BS.

You're right about the Last Emperor flip. I used to listen to LE alot, too, but then I kinda lost track. Does he even still record?

I haven't figured out all the sampled material for the Atmosphere LP yet, but I'm on it. I recognize some of the interpolations like Gary Wright's "Time Machine", but yeah...still working on that one.

Tim---Much gratitude for the kind words. Always helps to know the efforts are appreciated.

As far as your question, I'll look into it, but I can't think of a cover off the top of my head. I know that there's a popular mash-up of it that was sped up and mixed with "Scrabble" by Rene Costy.

The lyrics were written by Darondo as far as I know, and the strings were arranged by Ray Dobard. It was a relatively obscure track until Justin Torres and Gilles Peterson both made an effort to blow the dust off of it.

I'll do some research and let you know if I come across any info about cover versions.

audie---I can't recommend Debbie Taylor's recordings highly enough. Definitely worth a look.

anon---I can't front on Gladys...ever. I pride myself on discovering rarities, but occasionally the best records are staring you right in the face. Same with L. Dozier, although at this time of year, I can't remember shit about sunny days. I'd give anything to work up a good sweat right about now.

NN---I truly appreciate the props, and thanks for telling your friends about Souled On. One love and all the best.

Anon---You're welcome. Thanks for taking time to drop a comment.
