Souled On Samples XVIII: The Mighty Love Edition

I thought about waiting to deliver this love-ly post until Valentine's Day, but somehow that just seemed too normal conventional. Besides...with any luck, I'll be getting my groove on in a whole different context that night. Pimpin' ain't easy, soul kids...

Erich Fromm once said that "love is the only sane and satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence". That's profound and everything, but on the flip side, it's also the craziest shit you will ever experience in your lifetime...Can I get an "amen", brothers and sisters?

Despite the insanity inherent in the subject matter, these love songs should only be approached with an open mind and a full heart. Just remember it's not my fault if your boss hears you crying like a little girl in your cubicle...a'ight?

Peace and one love, snitches...Scholar

Supplemental Materials:

Who says thugs don't have a sensitive side?

Ghostface's video for "All That I Got Is You"...

...and 2Pac's "Keep Ya Head Up"

Bonus mp3s (zShare):

"Getaway"---OC

*From his criminally slept-on Starchild LP

"I Love You So (Live)"---Tekitha

*As you may know, my girl Tekitha stood in for Mary J Blige on GFK's "All That I Got Is You". After falling in love with her voice on the numerous tracks that she cut with the Wu and various members of the Clan fam-a-lam, I'm still fiendin' for a proper release by this powerhouse vocalist. Fortunately, there are lots of miscellaneous tracks and bootlegs floating around to console me while I wait patiently for the improbable.

"BabyLet'sHaveABabyBeforeBushDoSomethin'Crazy"-The Coup w/ Silk E

*I've had this song running through my mind the entire time I was writing this post, which somehow justified its placement with the rest. A tongue-in-cheek (yet somehow beautifully insightful) commentary on the state of love in the post-9/11, tragically bleak years of the Bush administration...

Word From Your Moms:

"The body, she says, is subject to the forces of gravity. But the soul is ruled by levity, pure." ---Saul Bellow

"When love is not madness, it is not love."---Pedro Calderon de la Barca

"The art of love... is largely the art of persistence."---Albert Ellis

"Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity."---Henry Van Dyke

I've owed you a comment for a while so here it is. I come here religiously to get schooled on great songs. I'm only 17 so I have a lot of catching up to do but I get my learn on every time I stop by

Once again a very nice grip of songs.

Tranks bruh

Ooh Ooh Child is one my absolute favorites of The Five Stairsteps. It is still my national anthem when the bullshit of this world gets a little too deep.

If I may add to Word From Your Moms: A wise person once told me this;
"All we have is what's left"
?

Love like you've never been hurt before. Mark Twain

Time is to be fulfilled not wasted.

Love is both madness and persistence ;)

Percy---So you really are a soul child then, huh? Glad that I can play some small part in your higher learning.

Charlie---Yeah...love is patient and kind, but never, ever sensible.

Paul---Good to hear from you, family. I wasn't sure how well a collection of nothing but love songs would go over, so I'm relieved that people seemed to enjoy it. Respect...

Wifey---Love the name. I'm guilty of not being as familiar with The O'Jays as I should be (crazy, I know). I just started really diggin' this album several months ago, but now it's been elevated to an essential.

Hawkes---There are some joints on Ghost's first two solo LPs that will forever epitomize the power and magnitude of hip-hop. "All That I Got Is You" is undoubtedly one of them.

nofrillz---Thanks for the props. I ran through your spot earlier today. Really liked what I saw of the content, but I need to make a return trip when I have some more time to kill.

BTW, I never stop doing research...always have to keep schoolin' myself. Thankfully I can share some of my knowledge here, 'cuz my real-life fam is understandably sick of hearing about it.

tarteso---Gratitude. You couldn't have said anything nicer.

PK---"Ooh Child" has to be one of the most perfect songs ever. I used to sing that when I was still rockin' a diaper.

So you remember what I told you about what RJ said before he died? I think about that shit every day---the infinite wisdom of a man facing the end of his life. He had a lot to teach me in those final days.

Much love to you for being such a beautiful girl...inside and out.

graz---Thanks, man. You're one of the main reasons why I keep the series rolling...

Hope you're keeping up w/ your production, fam...
